Shadowrock Rare Books has successfully facilitated donations to universities, libraries and museums on behalf of clients. Whether it is an item you already own or an item in our inventory that you would like to offer as a bequest, we are able to help place the gift with the appropriate institution. We view these donations as ‘win-win’: the institution acquires a valuable piece they otherwise could not afford and the donor receives recognition as well as a tax benefit.
Since tax law changes frequently, we ask that anyone interested in making a donation should first seek guidance from an accountant or other tax adviser to determine any potential deduction based on their specific tax liability for any given year.
As a helpful reminder, under current United States tax law, donors who wish to receive a tax deduction for gifts with a value over $500 but less than $5,000 must file a completed IRS Form 8283. For gifts with a value exceeding $5,000 a donor must secure a formal appraisal to accompany an IRS Form 8283.
Upon receipt of a gift, the institution will issue a formal Letter of Acknowledgement to the donor. The letter serves as an official document, for tax purposes, that records the nature of the gift and the date it was received.
